  15. From Zac:
I notice that you do not get any commission for this. I was thinking that if it costs you money to update and further extend the sophistication of this website then maybe even a .50 charge for sold books. This is still by far ( I Mean by far) less then competitors and you can agree to only take a .50 charge if there is an actual sale. Just a thought.

  16. Question from L:
Hi, can I list the complete solution manual to a book on this site?

  17. Question from Catalina:
Is there any possibility of advertising my website on your site? Thank you soo much! Have a great day!

  18. Comment from Jose:
Your site accused me of attempting to "hack" the system. Two suggestions: New color schemes, and a less abrasive error message.

  19. Comment from Goonasabi:
I have a feeling this site (which is very useful for us all) will be used incorrectly. I think maybe more people will use this site to list their books and hope for a sell rather than go looking for a book they actually need. Tell me what you think.

  20. I have more questions or comments. How can I reach you?

  1. What is SwampBoard?

SwampBoard is the website that helps you find buyers and sellers for your textbooks. It’s the cure to high bookstore prices and online commission that empty your wallet! It was started by a disgruntled student who’s been ripped off too often.

  2. Is SwampBoard free?

    Yes, absolutely positively free.

  3. Forever?

    Yes.

  4. How do I use SwampBoard?

If you are buying a book, search by the book either by ISBN, Title or Author. When you find a listing you want, contact the seller. Provide them with your contact information - giving a cellphone number and a convenient time to call would expediate transactions faster than e-mail. When the seller agrees to sell you the book, the two of you meet up on campus and exchange money and book.

If you are selling a book, create an account and list the books you are selling. When someone contacts you to buy the book, contact them back to confirm the transaction and agree to a meeting time/location. Give them your book, get your money.

  5. Awesome service! How can I help?

Tell all your friends about SwampBoard. It will help you too! Your friend’s friends may have the book you need, or need the book you are selling.
If you know companies that would pay for ads on the site, tell them about SwampBoard.

  6. School has already started and I haven't sold book! What can I do?

Most students don't buy their books until a few days after school has started, usually the week after add drop is over. If you really need money, bookstores are willing to buyback books during the add/drop period and some (i.e. TIS) have year round buyback. You can also post it on half.com or amazon.com and get a nationwide market. Some schools start later than us and you can catch those students.

  7. I told someone I wanted to buy the book, but I don’t want to buy it anymore. What can I do?

Stop being a jerk and reconsider. If I get many complaints, I will start a system to hold people accountable for their actions.

  8. I told someone I was going to sell them the book, but I don’t want to sell it anymore. What can I do?

Stop being a jerk and reconsider. If I get many complaints, I will start a system to hold people accountable.

  9. Someone said they were going to buy my book, but it seems they fell off the face of the earth, what can I do?

Right now, nothing, besides calling them a jerk – sell it to someone else.

  10. Someone said they were going to sell me a book, but it seems they fell off the face of the earth, what can I do?

Right now, nothing, besides calling them a jerk – buy from someone else.

  11. Can I search by course number?

No, sorry. My reasoning is, a book may be used in more than one course, or different teachers for the same course may use a different book. I want to save buyers the mistake of buying a book used in a different class, or not finding their book because it was listed in a different class.

Using the ISBN is the best way to search for the exact book you need.

  12. How do I know what price to set?

Check out the prices on Amazon.com and half.com You can figure in that you would lose about 15% of your sale to commission, but a buyer would pay $3 more in shipping. From there guestimate a decent price to set.

  13. The publisher came out with a new edition. No one wants it. What can I do?

If you know for sure the previous edition and new edition are almost identical, people may be willing to purchase it. You may want to list the ISBN as the new edition, just make sure you mention the edition in the description and set a good price! Providing previous homework and tests may help.

  14. Do you accept credit card or deferment?

    No, sorry, SwampBoard does neither.

If you want to use a credit card, maybe you can work something out with PayPal. The buyer and seller can both be present in front of a computer, where the seller witnesses the buyer paying them through PayPal before handing over the book. Don’t forget though, PayPal charges a commission.

If you need deferment, maybe the seller will be willing to hold the book for you until your money comes in if you guarantee you will buy it at the current price.

That has been an idea I've thought about. I personally would rather put non-intrusive ads on the site, to keep it free for all students. It won't make as much money as commission based, but I'm not using this site to get rich, just to transform the school. I haven't asked local businesses to put ads up, and will only do so if SwampBoard becomes very successful (say, 5000 registered users).

  16. Question from L:
Hi, can I list the complete solution manual to a book on this site?

Sure. A hint in selling it: List it as the ISBN for the book it is for, you’ll get more views at it. Be sure you mention it is not the book, rather than the solution manual. This goes for note packets, guides, etc..

  17. Question from Catalina:

Is there any possibility of advertising my website on your site? Thank you soo much! Have a great day!

Advertisements for other websites, businesses and such are dealt with on a case by case business. Money would give you a better chance :) Non-profit orgs have a good chance. I.e. if you are a student organization with a special event or doing something for a good cause.

  18. Comment from Jose:

Your site accused me of attempting to "hack" the system. Two suggestions: New color schemes, and a less abrasive error message.

    Reply:

The message board on SwampBoard is a 3rd party software and I don’t have much control over when it says you are hacking and what it doesn’t. Sorry you received the message,
The green color scheme gives the feeling of a swamp. I wanted something that represents UF without orange and blue.

    Reply:
I certainly hope people recognize the value of SwampBoard and use it for all their book needs. It will help them save money whether they are selling or buying. Though to be honest, I’ve seen book prices a lot higher than half.com, some even near the new book price. SwampBoard is not the place to jack up book prices and hope you rip off someone. Using Half.com to indicate what price to set is the best idea. I’ve seen book prices set a lot higher than the price at half.com, some even near the new book price. It won’t be sold.
